View and compare.  Take time to physically to view and compare the features of different pencil sharpeners.  The more you actually see, the more acute your observations will become.  You will also learn as you go and learn little details about a pencil sharpener that you had not thought of the more that you view.  The more you view, the more of those small and technical nitty gritty details you will learn, all of which will eventually become useful.  Ask lots of questions and make a note of pencil sharpeners that you are particularly interested in.  Even if you are not interested in buying right now or if the pencil sharpener is bought by someone else, you will learn from that experience when you do buy one later.

Be patient.  Be willing to be patient and not buy it.  Especially do not buy on impulse.  Definitely do not buy the same day that you view a pencil sharpener.  You must take the time to reflect over your decision for at least one night.  The next day, you may decide that you definitely want to purchase that pencil sharpener, but more than likely, you will decide to hold off on it and think about it more.  Do not let salespeople push you into buying.  Never rush on your decision.  Take your time.

Nothing in this world is perfect.  Therefore, if you think that you would like to have a pencil sharpener and it has the features that you are pleased with, then go ahead and purchase it if you have enough money.  You might as well spend the money because that's what money is there for.  You can also think of it as helping the salesperson or the person who is selling the commodity. 

Look into the future.  Look into the future a little bit and see if this is the type of pencil sharpener that you would like to be using five years from now.  Of course, you could always buy another or a new pencil sharpener at that time, but it's certainly a useful tactic to look into.  You certainly don't want to be buying another pencil sharpener in two months.  If a certain pencil sharpener does not have all the features you are looking for, then consider buying one that is slightly more expensive.  You often get what you pay for, and quality is often more important than price.  However, do be reasonable and examine your budget carefully when deciding what to purchase.

Obtain evaluations from others.  These evaluations could be online such as from Amazon, or better yet, from trusted family members or friends.  When reading online evaluations, there are several items to keep in mind.  First, there must not be an overly high number of total reviews.  If there are, and if almost all of them are positive, then something is fishy.  You can gage what is an overly high number of reviews by noting when that product came out and comparing it with the number of reviews seen in similarly-dated items.  Second, the reviews should not all sound similar, which would suggest that one person had written all of them.  Third, there should not be a large number of reviews that was submitted in a very short period of time.  Even if the number of reviews is not large, but there was a large number of reviews submitted within a short time interval, then something is suspicious.  Fourth, some websites even allow you to see all the reviews written by a particular person.  If that person has only written one very positive review for that product, and there are quite a few of those people, once again, the evaluation itself should be evaluated.

Remember to check the refund policy.  Check within how long you can refund a certain item, and if there might be a restocking fee that you must also pay.  Of course, the safest thing to assume is that you cannot refund an item even if they say you can because they can always say certain conditions apply.
